Stellantis proposes multi-speed transmission for EVs
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Stellantis is exploring the implementation of multi-speed transmissions to boost the effectivity of electrical automobiles, based on a not too long ago disclosed patent software. The submitting, which was printed by the USA Patent and Trademark Workplace (USPTO) on February 27, 2025, however initially submitted in 2023, particularly addresses the combination of a second ahead gear into the drive modules generally utilized in electrical automobiles.

The patent doc primarily particulars how the transmission would transition between the 2 gears. Stellantis reveals plans to make the most of magnetic fluid, a know-how already employed in some adaptive dampers. This fluid comprises ferrous metallic particles that reply to magnetic fields, permitting for extra environment friendly motion of the shafts that maintain the person gears in place, probably surpassing conventional hydraulically-actuated clutches.

Curiously, the doc references “electrified automobiles” quite than solely specializing in electrical automobiles (EVs). This broad terminology encompasses hybrids and plug-in hybrids, reminiscent of Stellantis’ Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid and Jeep 4xe fashions. Using a separate 2-speed gearbox for an electrical motor in hybrid techniques is not a novel idea; Mercedes-Benz has efficiently integrated this setup in a few of its AMG efficiency plug-in hybrids.

This patent submitting is the second in current months from Stellantis associated to multi-speed transmissions for electrical motors. The primary, printed by the USPTO in January 2024, targeting off-road purposes and featured a special gear-actuation know-how.

The Porsche Taycan exemplifies the appliance of multi-speed transmissions in manufacturing electrical automobiles. Mercedes plans to implement related techniques in its future electrical fashions, whereas Lucid has developed its personal design. Conversely, Volkswagen has acknowledged it is not going to pursue this method, and Honda is innovating with a handbook transmission that includes a clutch pedal to draw automotive lovers for its upcoming 0 Sequence EVs.
