Rivian’s $6.6 billion federal mortgage for its Georgia plant is presently unsure attributable to a freeze on federal funding and loans imposed by President Donald Trump. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has expressed doubts about whether or not Rivian will obtain the meant monetary assist underneath the present administration.

Lately, the U.S. Workplace of Administration and Finances issued a memo calling for a spending freeze on varied types of federal help, together with scholar loans, enterprise loans, and grants for state and native governments. This memo was rescinded simply two days later, leaving many stakeholders in a state of confusion.

Governor Kemp famous, “Rivian secured that mortgage on the tail finish of the Biden administration, and there’s no secret that the Trump administration is reviewing these issues. I’m not sure the place that stands proper now,” he advised Channel 2.

In November 2024, the Biden administration permitted the $6.6 billion mortgage, meant for Rivian to assist the development of its manufacturing facility in Georgia. This mortgage contains $6 billion in principal and roughly $600 million in capitalized curiosity. Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe remarked that the funding would enable the corporate to scale its U.S. manufacturing operations extra aggressively for its competitively priced R2 and R3 automobiles, which deal with each functionality and affordability.

Rivian stays optimistic about receiving the federal mortgage, emphasizing its contribution to job creation in Georgia and the strengthening of onshore U.S. manufacturing. A spokesperson said, “We’ve established parameters to guard taxpayers, and Rivian has assured us they’re dedicated to following by way of with their plans.”

Governor Kemp commented on the state of affairs, stating, “We’ve got assurances from Rivian that they’re coming, and we’re taking them at their phrase.”
