OMV has reportedly closed its hydrogen station in Vienna and plans to shut extra websites in Graz, Innsbruck, Asten, and Wiener Neudorf by the top of August 2025. Just one station will stay operational, nevertheless it is not going to be open to the general public.

The corporate was an early investor in hydrogen, debuting a refueling station in Vienna-Floridsdorf again in 2012. Nonetheless, they’ve acknowledged that “regardless of these early investments, demand for hydrogen as a gas fell wanting expectations.”

This displays the present low demand for gas cell-powered automobiles in Austria. Based on Statistics Austria, solely 62 of those automobiles had been registered by the top of February, with only one new registration in 2024. Of the 62 automobiles on the highway, solely 5 are owned by non-public people, whereas the bulk are used for industrial functions. Most hydrogen automobiles in Austria are from Hyundai (48 models), adopted by 13 from Toyota and one from VW.

As OMV is the only operator of hydrogen refueling stations in Austria, their resolution considerably impacts the way forward for the sector within the nation. The corporate has introduced a shift in focus in direction of growing a ‘nationwide fast-charging community’ by means of OMV eMotion, which signifies a transfer in direction of battery electrical automobiles (BEVs). Nonetheless, hydrogen will nonetheless play a job in OMV’s industrial operations, with the commissioning of their first 10MW electrolysis plant for inexperienced hydrogen deliberate for this 12 months in Vienna Schwechat. OMV asserts that this plant will function a fabric useful resource in refineries to supply “sustainable” jet gas and diesel.
