The ‘Pioneer’ initiative, partially funded by EU Innovation Funds, aligns with ADR’s aim to succeed in net-zero emissions by 2030. It highlights the potential of repurposed electrical car (EV) expertise to offer clear, versatile vitality past its unique software in autos.

The BESS has a complete capability of 10 MWh. Nissan contributed 84 second-life Nissan LEAF batteries, which collectively present 2.1 MWh of vitality storage. These batteries are built-in into Enel’s Vitality Storage System by Loccioni, the designated system integrator.

Moreover, the Pioneer initiative is paired with a Photo voltaic Farm outfitted with 55,000 photo voltaic panels, anticipated to generate 31 GWh of renewable vitality yearly. This setup will provide dependable, clear energy to the airport terminals and provide versatile companies to the airport grid.

Importantly, as soon as the batteries have reached the tip of their helpful life on this venture, we’re accountable for their recycling.”

Nissan has efficiently collaborated with Loccioni and vitality supplier Enel on related vitality storage initiatives, such because the Melilla ESS in Spain and the Nomadic LabAlliance Inner ESS system, demonstrating the effectiveness and reliability of second-life battery expertise for steady, renewable vitality options.

El Khomri emphasised the transformation of potential waste into helpful vitality belongings. He famous that the re-use technique not solely advantages massive industrial initiatives like Fiumicino Airport but additionally holds promise for dwelling functions, comparable to backup energy throughout outages. “As we proceed to scale battery reuse and recycling, we’re advancing our mission towards a cleaner, extra energy-efficient future,” he defined.
