Italy targets BYD, Tesla, VW and others over EV battery and driving range claims

Italy’s client safety and competitors authority has initiated investigations into 4 distinguished electrical car (EV) producers: BYD, Stellantis, Tesla, and Volkswagen. This motion is prompted by issues concerning probably deceptive claims associated to battery capability, driving vary, and different components.

The Italian Competitors Authority, often called L’Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato (AGCM), introduced final week that it might be investigating the native branches of those main automakers for what it describes as “suspected unfair business practices.”

The investigations will deal with publicly obtainable data regarding EV driving vary, battery capability degradation, and the restrictions related to customary battery warranties. The AGCM argues that these points might violate the nation’s client safety legal guidelines.

The AGCM famous, “Specifically, the businesses’ web sites seem to have displayed generic – and at occasions contradictory – data concerning the driving vary of their marketed electrical autos, with out clarifying which components affect the marketed most vary and the extent to which they have an effect on the precise vary.”

Moreover, it was noticed that the businesses’ web sites might not present shoppers with clear and complete details about battery capability degradation ensuing from common use, in addition to the phrases and limitations of ordinary battery warranties.

As a part of the investigation course of, the AGCM performed inspections of the businesses’ native amenities in collaboration with Guardia di Finanza, the specialised antitrust unit of the Italian Monetary Police.

Stellantis has confirmed that it has absolutely cooperated with the AGCM, offering the required responses, data, and documentation associated to the investigation. A spokesperson for Stellantis said, “Stellantis Europe S.p.A. is satisfied that it has offered sufficient, exact, and exhaustive solutions to the questions posed by the officers in Turin and can proceed to cooperate to discover any additional related features related to the investigation.”
