The BMW Group is testing large-format, all-solid-state battery (ASSB) cells from Strong Energy in a BMW i7 automobile within the Munich space. ASSB know-how gives a number of benefits, together with larger power density inside a compact storage system in comparison with present applied sciences.

Since 2022, the collaboration between BMW and Strong Energy has deepened underneath a know-how switch settlement aimed toward advancing ASSB growth.

Each firms acknowledge the potential of ASSB know-how, which guarantees higher power density that might result in prolonged automobile ranges with out the added weight related to conventional battery techniques. John Van Scoter, President and CEO of Strong Energy, expressed satisfaction in demonstrating true ASSB cells in a automobile, emphasizing their dedication to innovation utilizing sulfide electrolytes for electrical automobiles (EVs).

Martin Schuster, Vice President of Battery Cell and Cell Module at BMW, highlighted the i7 ASSB take a look at automobile as a testomony to the corporate’s open method to know-how. BMW is devoted to enhancing battery cell growth and increasing its information by means of partnerships just like the one with Strong Energy.

The take a look at automobile integrates an idea battery following Gen5 building rules and progressive module designs to accommodate Strong Energy’s ASSB cells. Analysis will give attention to the administration of cell growth, working strain management, and temperature regulation.

The forthcoming months will present the BMW Group with priceless insights from the testing of Strong Energy’s sulfide-based electrolyte cells built-in into battery packs. These cells had been developed collaboratively with specialists from BMW, though additional steps are wanted to optimize ASSB know-how for aggressive use.

The partnership between BMW and Strong Energy dates again to 2016, supported by BMW’s funding in Strong Energy in Might 2021. In late 2022, they agreed to boost their collaboration, with BMW set to function a stable cell prototype line on the Cell Manufacturing Competence Middle (CMCC) in Parsdorf, leveraging Strong Energy’s experience.

Since 2008, BMW has been increasing its experience in battery know-how, consolidating this data on the Battery Cell Competence Middle (BCCC) in Munich since 2019. The BCCC encompasses all points of the worth chain, from analysis and growth to battery cell design and manufacturing.

To speed up improvements in battery cell know-how, BMW collaborates with round 300 companions, together with established companies, startups, and educational establishments. This partnership with Strong Energy underscores BMW’s dedication to advancing progressive battery applied sciences alongside main business companions, guaranteeing entry to cutting-edge battery cell analysis globally.
