ABB E-mobility and MAN Successfully Test Megawatt Charging
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In collaboration with MAN Truck & Bus, ABB E-mobility has achieved a big milestone by finishing its first MCS charging checks utilizing Ethernet-based communication. This communication technique is standardized in ISO-15118-20 and the not too long ago launched ISO-15118-10, which outline the protocol for MCS charging.

At present, MCS-ready vans and chargers are on the verge of being delivered to market, and the MCS customary is almost finalized. Nevertheless, earlier variations and megawatt-level trials beforehand relied on the communication strategies related to CCS charging. The mixing of Ethernet-based communication enhances reliability and ensures seamless interoperability for high-power functions.

Marcel Hessel, Unit Supervisor for Charging Methods & Elements at MAN Truck & Bus, said, “Our precise MCS take a look at with the most recent communication requirements with Ethernet confirms the viability and reliability of MCS charging, marking the following main step towards a sturdy, industry-wide megawatt charging community. Logistics firms should belief that megawatt charging will work reliably from day one – and these profitable checks show that MCS is able to ship.”

The checks have been performed at MAN’s facility in Munich, the place the total capabilities of MCS have been showcased utilizing proof-of-concept chargers constructed on the Terra Excessive Energy platform. Charging periods exceeded 700V and 1,000A, validating system stability for long-duration, high-power charging. This stability is essential for fleet operators who rely on minimizing downtime and maximizing effectivity.

With this achievement, ABB E-mobility and MAN have indicated that the {industry} is ready for a whole transition to a standardized MCS system. Christopher Thompson, Head of Product Advertising at ABB E-mobility, remarked, “Reaching this 1,000A milestone with the absolutely standardized MCS charging interface primarily based on Ethernet communication utilizing the newest protocols was a significant achievement! This take a look at highlights our robust cooperation with MAN and our shared dedication to enabling dependable, financial, and sustainable transport.”
