Volkswagen’s iconic hatchback, the Golf, is seeing a decline in recognition. In response, the corporate plans to shift Golf manufacturing to Mexico as curiosity within the present gasoline-powered mannequin wanes. An upcoming electrical model might be produced in Germany alongside a brand new electrical SUV.

Volkswagen’s works council chairman, Daniela Cavallo, said that the development surrounding the Golf is rising more and more inevitable. Manufacturing numbers have plummeted, with solely about 300,000 items constructed final 12 months—a stark distinction to over 1,000,000 in 2025. This 12 months’s manufacturing goal is a mere 250,000 items.

The corporate is at the moment restructuring its Wolfsburg plant, which has been the center of Golf manufacturing. By 2027, gas-powered Golf manufacturing will transition to Mexico, whereas the electrical model might be assembled in Germany, together with an electrical successor to the T-Roc SUV.

Throughout this transition interval, the Wolfsburg plant may undertake a four-day work week. Cavallo talked about that this situation is a chance beginning in 2027. Moreover, Volkswagen plans to scale back its workforce in Germany by 35,000 jobs by the last decade’s finish, with over 20,000 workers already agreeing to early contract termination.

The upcoming ID.EVERY1, Volkswagen’s entry-level electrical automobile, will precede the electrical Golf, making it the second automobile constructed on Rivian’s structure. Tech chief Kai Grunitz confirmed that the ID 1 will pioneer this new system, paving the way in which for the electrical Golf.

In keeping with reviews, the electrical Golf will even be one of many preliminary autos constructed utilizing Volkswagen’s new SSP platform, which options a complicated 800V structure designed to reinforce charging effectivity. The launch of the EV variant, known as the “ID Golf,” is predicted in 2028, with manufacturing set for the Wolfsburg facility alongside the brand new electrical T-Roc.
